HOW TO REMOVE FLUORIDE FROM WATER

" Fluoride is found naturally in soil, water, and foods. It is also produced synthetically for use in drinking water, toothpaste, mouthwashes and various chemical products. "

Water authorities use some small amount of fluoride in municipal water supply, because studies have shown that using recommended amount of fluoride level in water can reduce the prevalence of tooth decay.

Tooth decay is one of the common problem that affect children or even adults. Many people around the world cannot afford regular dental checkup so adding fluoride can offer benefits to who need it.

Risks

Excess exposure of fluoride is not good it can bring several health issues like dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, thyroid problems, neurological problems and other health problems like  acne and other skin problems, cardiovascular problems, including arteriosclerosis and arterial calcification, high blood pressure, myocardial damage, cardiac insufficiency and heart failure.

So How to Filter Fluoride From Drinking Water

The following process are used to eliminate excess fluoride content  in drinking water.

  • Reverse Osmosis
  • Distillation Process
  • Activated Alumina.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse Osmosis is the best process to filter maximum amount of fluoride from water. This forces water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure that will leave contaminants behind and dispense more pure and healthy drinking water. Although most reverse osmosis systems are effective at removing fluoride as well as lead, pesticides and cysts, the semi permeable membrane within the system can grow over time as contaminants are continually pressured against it.

Distillation Process

Distillation is an effective and affordable method to remove fluoride from water. As the water is heated, the steam evaporates from the boiling water, where it is captured in another container. This process leaves the fluoride and other contaminants behind. The vapors in the other container then transition back into a pure and distilled water upon cooling.

Activated Alumina

Activated alumina is a porous, solid form of aluminum oxide. It effectively absorbs fluoride and other contaminants from water, which is why the EPA recommends it as a viable option for purifying drinking water.

These alumina filters only work on water with a pH less than 8.5. For fluoride removal, the water pH should be between 5 and 6. As water passes through the filter, contaminants are absorbed into the activated alumina granules, resulting in purer water.

In a study, alum impregnated activated alumina was used to remove fluoride from drinking water with the removal efficiency of 99% at pH 6.5

Myth of Fluoride Removing Process.

Some people believes boiling tape water can remove fluoride content in water. However, this method actually increases concentration because, as the water boils, the vapors escape and leave the mineral behind.
