Hard water problems and solutions

HARD WATER PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

What is hard water?

Hard water is a type of water that contains some minerals like magnesium and calcium. They may have small concentrations of ions such as Sodium, Chloride and Sulphate derived from wind action over the sea. According to the concentration of multivalent cations like calcium and magnesium available in water, hardness of water can be categorized into permanent hardness and temporary hardness.

Permanent hardness (mineral content) is generally difficult to remove by boiling, If this occurs, it is usually caused by the presence of calcium sulfate/calcium chloride and/or magnesium sulfate/magnesium chloride in the water, which do not precipitate out as the temperature increases. Ions causing permanent hardness of water can be removed using a water softener, or ion-exchange

However, unlike the permanent hardness caused by sulfate and chloride compounds, this "temporary" hardness can be reduced either by boiling the water, or by the addition of lime (calcium hydroxide) through the process of lime softening. Boiling promotes the formation of carbonate from the bicarbonate and precipitates calcium carbonate out of solution, leaving water that is softer upon cooling.

Risks of using hard water:

Hard water may not cause any health issues, but it is not appreciable for drinking purpose. It is not recommended to use hard water for washing clothes, bathing and dish wash. Because it will make some residue patches on your washed clothes or dishes. Hard water might even be forced to use so much soap so that you can carry out your cleaning effectively.

Irritation:

Using hard water for bathing may cause irritation on several parts of your body eventually. Your skin is one that is most vulnerable, using hard water may cause skin dryness. Once the minerals land on your skin when showering or washing using this type of water, you might start feeling some itchiness or discomfort.

Clogging:

Using hard water may cause clogging in the pipes. Mineral deposits may form on your pipe, and this would result in clogging. You may be forced to spend a lot in plumbing repairs as a result of clogging. For ex If clogging happens in heating appliances it will charge more electrical cost and plumbing repair cost.

Tasteless Water:

Water has to be pure and tasty for healthy lifestyle. Due presence of minerals it hard water is having metallic and salty, so it is very unlikely being used for drinking purpose and it also may create some health issues.

Solution For Treating  Hard water:

Installation  of  Softener Plant

Water softening systems reduce the hardness of water by replacing the hardness minerals calcium and magnesium ions which can be regenerated with sodium salt or potassium salt. Hard water creates unsightly scale on water fixtures; coats water heating elements causing power loss and increased electricity consumption; wastes soap by reducing its lathering ability, and it leaves a residue on your skin and hair.

Ion exchange is a process of removing undesirable dissolved ions from fresh water and replacing them with other ions with the same electrical charge from ion-exchange resin. Ion exchange is a recommendable hard water treating system.

Ion exchange systems function by removing positively charged mineral ions from hard water and replacing them with positively charged sodium ions. These water softening systems have two tanks: a brine tank and a resin tank. The resin tank contains negatively charged resin beads, with positively charged sodium ions attached. When hard water enters the resin tank, the hard mineral ions in the hard water are attracted to the resin. The sodium ions are displaced into the water flow in order to maintain electrical balance.

Over time, as the resin becomes saturated with mineral ions it is necessary to refresh the system. In order to do this, highly concentrated saltwater in the brine tank is flushed into the resin tank. The saltwater displaces the mineral ions on the resin, which are then flushed down the drain. Once this process is complete, the system is recharged.

Advantages of Ion Exchange

·         Inexpensive

·         Effective against dissolved in organic contaminants

·        Able to remove arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, sulfates, uranium, and more negatively charged contaminants

·        Able to remove manganese, iron, chromium, magnesium, calcium, and more positively charged contaminants

·         Regenerable for continuous usage
